How to Apply NOVEX AQUALIN Timber Stain on Big Jobs

Tackling a large timber surface like a fence, trellis, pergola, or weatherboard? Spraying is the way to go. NOVEX AQUALIN Timber Stain is designed for brush, roller, or spray—but when you're working on a big area, a sprayer saves time and gives you a smooth, even finish that looks like it came from a pro.

Why Use a Sprayer with AQUALIN?

  • Speed it up – Spraying covers large spaces fast. No more hours spent brushing boards one by one.

  • Even coverage – Say goodbye to brush marks and patchy finishes.

  • Deeper protection – The linseed oil base sinks right into the timber for lasting results.

6 Steps for the Best Spray Finish with AQUALIN

1. Get the Surface Ready

Start clean. Wash the timber with NOVEX Timber Clean & Prep to remove dirt, mould, and residue. Do this at least two weeks ahead so the surface has time to dry fully.

2. Pick the Right Gear

Use an airless sprayer fitted with a fine-finish tip (0.011–0.015"). It keeps your spray controlled and helps the stain work into the grain.

3. Stir, Then Thin (if you have to)

Give the stain a good stir before pouring it in. If needed, thin it with a splash of water (up to 5%) to help it flow—though often it’s ready to go as-is.

4. Spray Like a Pro

Hold the nozzle 20–30 cm from the surface and work in steady, overlapping strokes. For vertical surfaces, go top to bottom. Break your job into sections so you can maintain a wet edge and avoid lap marks.

5. Add a Second Coat

AQUALIN dries in about 90 minutes. For a stronger finish and richer colour, apply a second coat either later that day or the next.

6. Clean Up Properly

Flush out your sprayer with cold water first, followed by warm soapy water if needed. Dispose of any oily rags carefully—linseed oil can spontaneously combust if stored the wrong way.

Pro Tips for Great Results

  • Mind the weather – Ideal conditions are between 5°C and 25°C. Avoid rain within 24 hours of application.

  • Always test first – Try a small patch to check colour and absorption on your timber.

  • Choose your look – AQUALIN comes in a range of earthy tones like Rustic Oak, Cedar Brown, and Charcoal Grey.
