HOW TO PREP YOUR DECK

A great-looking deck starts with good preparation. If you want your stain to last, the timber surface needs to be properly cleaned and ready to absorb it. That’s where NOVEX Timber Clean & Prep comes in.

Use a stiff broom or brush to scrub the surface, then rinse well.

Step 1 – Clean and Prepare

Before you reach for the stain, give your deck a thorough clean with NOVEX Timber Clean & Prep.

  • It removes dirt, mould, mildew, grease and oil.

  • It opens up the timber fibres so the stain can soak in evenly.

  • One litre makes up to five litres of cleaning solution.

Use a stiff broom or brush to scrub the surface, then rinse well. For decks with mould or mildew, treat the area with Timber Clean & Prep and leave for two weeks before scrubbing back and cleaning again.

Step 2 – Allow Timber to Weather

  • New Pine: Let it weather for 8 weeks. Sand shiny, machine-smooth timber if needed.

  • New Hardwoods: Weather for 12 weeks and rinse with water during this time to remove oily tannins.

  • Weathered Timber: Sand back grey, rough areas if you want to restore the natural grain, then clean with Timber Clean & Prep.

Step 3 – Choose Your Stain

Now your deck is ready, it’s time to protect it with one of our NOVEX stains:

NOVEX Super Deck: A durable, semi-transparent stain that brings out the grain of your timber while protecting it from UV and everyday wear. Ideal for pine or hardwood decks, outdoor furniture, fences, and homes.

  • Drying: Touch dry in ~2 hours on pine/softwoods. Leave overnight between coats on hardwoods or sealed timber. Light foot traffic after 24 hours.

NOVEX Elite Deck & Furniture Oil Stain: A one-coat water-based oil stain that penetrates deeply, highlighting the natural beauty of your timber. Perfect for decks, furniture, fences, and weatherboards, with long-lasting protection against New Zealand’s tough conditions.

  • Drying time: Touch dry in 24 hours, fully cured in 48 hours.

Step 4 – Apply Your Stain

  • Always stir well before use.

  • Apply evenly along the full length of each board to avoid lap marks.

  • Don’t over-apply—only use what the timber can absorb.

Allow to dry for at least 24 hours.

With the right preparation and the right NOVEX products, your deck will not only look great but also stay protected for years to come.
