How to Prep and Paint Your Timber Fence Properly with NOVEX:

If you want your fence paint or stain to last, it takes more than a brush and a tin of colour.

Good prep is what helps the product soak in, grip properly, and stand up to New Zealand’s tough weather.

Here’s how to do it properly using NOVEX products, step by step.

What you’ll need. Before you start, get everything ready:

Step 1: Kill mould, moss, and lichen first

Spray NOVEX TREAT-IT directly onto any visible mould, moss, or lichen.

This isn’t just a surface clean — TREAT-IT works into the timber and kills spores at the root, helping stop regrowth under your paint or stain.

This step is essential if you want a long-lasting finish.

Step 2: Let the timber dry completely

After treatment, allow the fence to dry fully before painting or staining.

Wet timber won’t absorb the product properly and can lead to peeling, flaking, or patchy results later on.

Step 3: Stir your product properly

Whether you’re using NOVEX Aqualin, TIMBERSTYLE, or MULTIVERSAL, give it a really good stir.

Use a bottom-to-top motion to make sure the pigments and resins are evenly mixed. This helps with colour consistency and performance.

Step 4: Apply the right way

Use long, even brush strokes and follow the grain of the timber.

Paint or stain in dry weather, ideally when temperatures are above about 5°C, and avoid direct hot sun on the surface. This gives the product time to soak in and level out nicely.

Step 5: Apply two coats

Two coats will always give you the longest life.

Allow at least two hours between coats, or follow the instructions on the label for best results.

Prep it right, paint it once

When you prep properly and use the right NOVEX product for the job, your fence will look better and last longer through the seasons.
