Surface Preparation is Key
Ensure timber is clean, dry, and free from dirt, mould, moss, grease, or contaminants.
We strongly recommend using:
-
NOVEX TIMBER CLEAN & PREP – for decks
-
NOVEX TREAT–IT – for outdoor furniture and general mould/moss removal
For new timber:
-
Pine: Weather for 8 weeks, then prep with NOVEX cleaner.
-
Hardwood: Weather for at least 12 weeks to allow tannins to leach out. Rinse several times and clean before staining.
For previously stained or weathered timber:
-
Use a stiff bristle brush to remove loose fibres, then clean and prep with the correct NOVEX treatment.
-
Avoid steel wool or wire brushes to prevent iron staining.
-
Light-medium pressure water blast if needed—avoid heavy blasting which can damage the timber surface.
Application Tips
-
Apply on a fine day when temperatures are between 5°C–30°C
-
Avoid rain within 24 hours of application
-
Stir thoroughly with a wide flat stirrer
-
Use a brush or applicator pad
-
Apply evenly along full board lengths to avoid lap marks
-
Only apply as much as the timber can absorb—do not over-apply
-
Coat board ends and edges where possible for best results
Drying & Recoating
-
Touch dry in 24 hours
-
Fully cured in 48 hours (longer in humid or cool conditions)
-
Allow longer drying time on hardwood or previously sealed surfaces
-
Recoat not usually needed, but if applying a second coat, ensure the first coat is completely touch dry and tack-free
Coverage
-
Approx. 6–10m² per litre per coat, depending on timber condition and absorbency
Rough, aged timber will absorb more stain.
Maintenance
-
Wash annually (especially after winter) with NOVEX TREAT–IT to remove dirt, salt, and bird droppings
-
Reapply every 2–5 summers or when the surface shows signs of wear
-
Dressed timbers may need earlier re-application due to initial limited absorption
Clean-up & Safety
-
Clean tools with cold water, then hot soapy water
-
Do not allow leftover product to enter drains or waterways
-
Dry empty containers and dispose of according to local regulations

Common Questions
Q: Can I apply ELITE over old oil-based decking oils or mineral oil finishes?
A: Yes – but only if the timber is dry, weathered, and ready for a new coat. The old finish must be well worn. Clean thoroughly and ensure the timber is absorbent before applying ELITE.
